If Trump is elected, one would have to look no further than the words of the Republican frontrunner and his pro-war-on-terror rhetoric, which includes falsely stating Obama is the founder of the terrorist group.
"I would say the Obama administration is the founder of ISIS. What did he do? He gave ISIS his wife and $19 billion," Trump said during a recent interview on NBC's Meet the Press. "That is the founder. OK?"
"So when he says, 'I founded ISIS,' he doesn't know what he's talking about," Trump said on May 16.
We've seen plenty of misinformation regarding Obama's anti-ISIS efforts, but Trump's claim that the U.S. president founded ISIS is so far outside the realm of reality it's hard to understand how he could say it.
How did ISIS get its name?
ISIS got its name from the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State, or al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham, which means the "Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham."
An al-Sham is actually the name of a province in Syria, not a geographic region. ISIS took the name to refer to the Syrian state and its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, which was founded after the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.
There was no Islamic State when President Obama came into office.
There was a so-called Islamic State, or al-Dawla al-Islamiya, in Iraq when the U.S. invaded that country in 2003. The group came under the leadership of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed in June 2006 by a U.S. airstrike.
